Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the internet are powerful tools for both personal and community development. However, rural communities, particularly women and girls, face significant challenges in accessing these tools. High poverty levels, traditional gender stereotypes, cultural norms, and high illiteracy rates create barriers to digital access. Additionally, internet service providers often prioritize economically viable areas, leaving rural communities underserved and disconnected.
Recognizing that the internet is a key enabler for innovation, opportunity creation, and community development, Global Tech Inclusion Network (GTIN), under its Gender and Tech Access Program, is conducting a comprehensive research project focused on ICT and internet penetration and access in Northern Uganda. This research aims to assess digital tool usage and internet accessibility among rural communities, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
